Loveland-based Lightning Systems announced Tuesday that it would begin delivering its new LightningElectric system for Ford Transit vans in March and that it has developed a hydrogen fuel cell that extends the range of the all-electric vehicles.
Last September, the company that made its name by developing a hydraulic-hybrid system said it had branched out into electric propulsion. Lightning Systems teamed up with New Eagle, an Ann Arbor, Mich., company that specializes in the electronic “brains” that drive mechanical systems.
During the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis this week, Lightning's electric system was displayed at the Ford booth, according to a press release.
Lightning Systems developed the fuel cell range extender with several partners in the industry, the release said. It extends the range of the Ford Transit LE 50 to more than 200 miles, the release said.
Lightning Systems, which developed carbon-fiber-wrapped pressure vessels to power its hydraulic-hybrid system, stores the hydrogen for its fuel cells in such vessels. A fuel cell uses hydrogen in a chemical reaction to create electricity.
